Why is my tax so high?

Seeing a larger deduction than usual can be unsettling. In many cases, UK PAYE changes are caused by timing or code changes rather than a payroll mistake.

Common reasons for a spike

The UK tax system works on a Pay As You Earn basis. When your income or employment details change, the system recalculates what to deduct from that pay period.

One-off payments can make payroll treat that month as if your earnings will stay higher, which can temporarily increase the PAYE deduction.

If you start a new role without a P45 or HMRC update, your employer may use an emergency code. That often changes how much tax-free allowance is applied.

Other causes can include taxable benefits, underpaid tax being collected through payroll, or a code that allocates your allowance to a different source of income.
